Fine tuners and pegs
Most student cellos have fine tuners on all four strings. Use them for small changes. Use the pegs only for large changes, pushing them gently into the pegbox as you turn.
Tune by ear in fifths
Once A is in tune, bow A and D together and adjust D until the fifth sounds smooth with no beating. Repeat with D and G, then G and C.
